Spacewalks Scheduled Today, Monday & Christmas Day, w/ Snorkels

A series of 3 spacewalks are scheduled to replace a cooling valve on the International Space Station

A 780 lbs. cooling module is in need of manual repair as attempts to fix the valve remotely from NASA headquarters has failed. Astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Michael Hopkins will make the first spacewalk the day this article is written, Saturday, then another Monday and finishing Wednesday, Christmas Day. They will be wearing snorkels because of an incident that occurred when Luca Parmitano almost drowned in July when water from his spacesuit pooled up in his helmet while attempting a spacewalk. This time the astronauts will have moisture absorbing pads around their necks to detect if water is seeping and actual snorkels that they could use in an emergency by bending down.
